A community group preserving St Madoc's Church, a site of local and historic interest, for continued use as a place of worship, and to educate the public in the history and heritage of the church and the local area.
Why does St Madoc’s need saving?
Due to changing demographics and falling church attendances, the Church in Wales decided to close St Madoc’s at the end of March 2022 and the community was presented with three options for the future:
- Selling St Madoc’s for conversion, probably to a holiday home.
- Leaving it to become a safe ruin.
- Leasing it to the local community.
The overwhelming feeling at the meeting was that the church was too important to lose, and the Saint Madoc of Ferns Community Group was formed.
Our Mission
The Preservation, for the public benefit, of St. Madoc of Ferns Church (St. Madoc’s) a medieval church and site of local and historic interest, thereby helping to ensure the continued use of the church as a place of worship and to educate the public in its history and heritage.
Our Aims
- To preserve St Madoc of Ferns Church (St Madoc’s), a site of local and historic interest, for public access and the benefit of the Havens and the wider community.
- Educate and inform the Havens community and visitors to the area of the history of St Madoc of Ferns Church, and the story of St Madoc.
- Promote visits to, and the use of the building, for historical education, recitals, art, or other purposes (subjects to conditions of any lease) by the local community in the Havens, and by visitors to the area.
- Promote St Madoc of Ferns Church as a part of the historic or spiritual pilgrimage routes in Wales through collaboration with organisations in the UK and Ireland concerned with St Madoc and St David.
- The CIO will support the use of the Church for services by The Church in Wales six times per year (between Annual General Meetings)
